ONE DAY IN SLIGO – IRELAND

Sligo is a small county located in the northwest of Ireland. It isn’t big, but it offers quite a lot. We drove thru Sligo on the way from a trip to County Donegal and spend exactly one day in Sligo. Sligo is a place where you can organize a day trip from Dublin, but it will also be great to combine with a trip to Mayo or Donegal. Due to the fact that Sligo wasn’t our main destination, we didn’t complete the entire planned route, but only the most important points.

Mullaghmore Head – One day in Sligo

Mullaghmore Head is a small peninsula with probably the best views of the amazing Ben Bulben Mountain. There is also a magnificent Classiebawn Castle of which photo on the background of Ben Bulben is one of the most famous photos from Emerald Island. The peninsula also has the small village of Cliffoney.

Classiebawn Castle – One day in Sligo

As we’ve already mentioned above, photos of Classiebawn Castle on the backdrop of Ben Bulben is an internet frenzy. Unfortunately, taking the perfect shot isn’t easy, if you don’t have a good telephoto lens, you probably won’t be able to achieve a better result than we did – we regret that we don’t have better equipment. Classiebawn Castle is a private castle, and the property is closed to the public, therefore photos of the castle are taken from quite a distance.

The castle was built in the 18th century for the third Viscount Palmerston. In 1939, the castle was inherited by the Mountbatten family, if you watched the series “Crown” then you may know the name. Lord Mountbatten was killed by a bomb blast on his boat planted by the IRA in 1979 off the coast of Mullaghmore. After Mountbatten’s death, stories appeared that the castle was haunted by ghosts.

Ben Bulben – One day in Sligo

An unusual mountain with a height of 526 meters. What is unusual about it? Shape! Ben Bulben is a mountain with a completely flattened peak, and its appearance differs slightly depending on which side we look from. Some of Ben Bulben’s slopes are kind of wrinkled. It is no exaggeration to say that it was Ben Bulben who made Sligo famous. Ben Bulben is a truly unique and extremely photogenic mountain!

Gleniff Horseshoe – One day in Sligo

Gleniff Horseshoe is a 10-kilometer loop leading through a narrow, quiet road with views of the Dartry Mountains. Breathtaking views guaranteed! It’s hard to write something more about this place, because the pictures themselves give a lot more!
